Plot

In the tumultuous era of the late 60s, amidst the harrowing backdrop of the Vietnam War, a beacon of youthful ideals and fervor, Jackie Willow, steps onto the hallowed grounds of Fort Meyer. Carrying the legacy of his veteran sergeant father, Jackie is a bright-eyed soldier, envisioning a future at the Academy, followed by a baptism by fire in Vietnam. His path soon intertwines with two of his father's old comrades-in-arms, the stalwart Sergeant Clell Hazard and the formidable Sergeant Major 'Goody' Nelson. Bearing witness to Jackie's determination, Hazard and Nelson take him under their seasoned wings, nurturing his potential while trying to temper his ardor with the harsh realities of war. A touching and insightful exploration into the heart of stateside military life unfolds as Jackie ascends through the ranks, marrying his childhood sweetheart, Rachel Feld, and earning the coveted title of lieutenant. Driven by his deep-seated ideals, Jackie volunteers for duty in Vietnam, leaving behind the verdant expanse of Arlington National Cemetery – the poetic "Garden of Stone". The film masterfully captures the poignant journey of a young soldier, the men who shape him, and the grave stone garden awaiting their return. It's a compelling narrative that delves into the stark contrast between the idealistic dreams of war and its deadly reality, set against the backdrop of a nation in the throes of conflict.
