From Prada to Nada (2011)

Nestled in the opulence of Beverly Hills, Mary and Nora Dominguez thrive in their affluent bubble, oblivious to their rich Hispanic heritage. Their father, an East L.A. native, has inadvertently sheltered them from their roots. Mary, the younger sibling, seeks solace in ceaseless shopping, while Nora, the elder, is a vehement law student with an insatiable thirst for knowledge. Their world crumbles when their father dies unexpectedly on his 55th birthday, revealing a bankrupt estate and a brother borne from a clandestine affair. Sold out by their father's mistress-turned-girlfriend, the sisters are ousted from their luxurious home and forced to seek refuge with their aunt in the heart of East L.A. Mary, spoiled and culturally ignorant, recoils in horror at this new reality, considering herself too refined for the vibrant chaos of the barrio. Nora, however, takes the upheaval in stride, viewing it as an opportunity to connect with their heritage. Mary, persuaded by Nora, returns to college, setting her sights on a well-to-do Teaching Assistant, viewing him as her ticket back to their lost paradise. Simultaneously, Nora lands an internship at a law firm, where she must navigate the complex dynamics of working with Edward, the brother of their father's girlfriend. As both sisters attempt to regain their footing, they begin to discover the richness and warmth embedded in the heart of East L.A.
