Plot

In the world of wealth and privilege, Max Clemington (Robert Cummings) and his father, Florian (Nigel Bruce), find themselves in a hilarious predicament of love and money. Both are seeking to join hands with affluent women, a task that would undoubtedly be less arduous if they weren't bereft of wealth themselves. Max sets his sights on the charming Martha Gray (Ruth Hussey), only to be met with rejection when he confesses his lack of fortune, a reality Martha shares. Martha, in desperation, agrees to wed the opulent Sir George Kelvin (Reginald Owen), only to rethink her decision within a day. Meanwhile, Florian’s attempts to amass wealth for Max's wedding devolve into a disastrous gambling spree, leaving him in steep debt. Upon discovering his father's predicament, Max concocts a plan to wed the affluent Lady Joan Culver (Dame Judith Anderson), a solution that could keep Florian out of jail. However, Lady Joan is not the woman who holds Max's heart, leading to an engaging tale of love, money, and the comical complications they bring.
