Plot

In the gripping heartland of America during the summer of 1944, Frank Stirn (Eric Stoltz) uproots his family to serve as a barber at Fort McCoy, a Wisconsin-based American Army and POW camp. Frustrated by his inability to join the frontlines, Frank finds his courage tested when a menacing Nazi SS Officer poses a threat to his wife (Kate Connor, portraying her real-life grandmother). Simultaneously, an unexpected romance blossoms between Frank's Catholic sister-in-law (Lyndsy Fonseca) and a Jewish soldier (Andy Hirsch), who is grappling with his traumatic experiences from the Battle of Monte Cassino and the loss of his best friend (Matthew Lawrence). Their audacious confidante (Camryn Manheim) nurtures this forbidden love, while the local priest (Seymour Cassel) is unable to support it. In the midst of these intertwining narratives, Frank's young daughter forms an unexpected friendship with a German prisoner of war. As this enchanting summer unfolds, it becomes starkly evident that the scars of war are not confined to the distant battlefields but seep into the tranquil corners of rural America, touching the lives of its unsuspecting residents.
