In the shadow of a devastating financial loss and the suicide of her husband Randy, Dianne Ackers seeks solace and a fresh start on the sun-kissed shores of California. However, fate intervenes, stranding her amidst the vast plains of Texas due to a car malfunction. To pay for the repairs, she adopts the identity of Dee Dee, a waitress in a local diner, and unwittingly crosses paths with the swindler who brought about her downfall. Not recognizing the woman he once duped, the conman enlists 'Dee Dee' as his aide in a new deceptive investment scheme.
In this unfamiliar world, Dianne finds an unexpected ally in Nando, a warm-hearted sheriff with a soft spot for her. Despite lacking any legal justification, Nando pledges to help Dianne unmask the charlatan under his new alias.
