Plot
In the aftermath of World War II, October 1945, Leopold Kessler, an American of German descent, embarks on a poignant journey to a war-torn Frankfurt. Resolute to remain impartial amid the ongoing chaos, he steps into his new role, courtesy of his embittered Uncle Kessler, as a sleeping car conductor on the once-grand Zentropa train line, a symbol of a shattered Germany.
As Leopold navigates through the ruins of the defeated nation, he's drawn into a complex web woven by the struggling populace, the Allied forces, and the influential Hartmann family - the former titans of the transportation business and owners of Zentropa. The enigmatic Katharina Hartmann, the daughter of the tormented entrepreneurial genius Max Hartmann, captivates Leopold, leading him into a world shadowed by secrets and divided loyalties.
His initial intent to help heal a wounded country is challenged as he unwittingly becomes a pawn in a dangerous game of power and retribution. He discovers the existence of a clandestine group, "Werewolves," terrorizing the country with subversive actions against the Allied forces and executing those who sympathize with them. Unveiling Katharina as a "Werewolf" further complicates Leopold's position, forcing him to confront the grim realities of the post-war world.
Leopold's neutrality is put to a severe test when he is cornered by the "Werewolves" following Max's tragic suicide. Caught in a whirlwind of love, intrigue, and political maneuvering, Leopold must grapple with his ideals and make challenging choices. He finds himself at a crossroads where neutrality is a luxury he can no longer afford, and every decision echoes the stark reality of a world trying to rebuild itself from the ashes of war.
