Eskimo (1933)

In the icy heart of the Canadian Arctic, Mala, a renowned hunter, lives a life of quiet contentment, providing for his tribe through his exceptional hunting prowess. His peaceful existence is disrupted when a fellow tribesman introduces him to the allure of trading furs with the white men for intriguing items such as a gun and an iron needle. Encouraged by his wife, Aba, Mala embarks on a grueling 500-mile journey across the frost-bitten tundra to the white man's "floating house" in Tjarnak. Upon arrival, Mala's exquisite furs catch the eye of the friendly captain, sparking a trade. However, the captain's insistent demand for Aba's company for the night stirs discontent in Mala. Despite the captain's promise of leaving Aba untouched during Mala's whale-hunting expedition, a festive celebration following a successful catch takes a dark turn. Aba is forcibly taken from her tent, intoxicated, and violated. The morning after, a drunken Aba stumbles from the ship, only to be mistaken for a beast in the snow and shot dead by a hunter. Returning from his expedition, Mala is met with the devastating news of Aba's demise, triggering his rage. He avenges his wife by harpooning the captain and leaves with his family. As he slowly recovers from his grief, he welcomes two new wives, including the long-smitten Iva. However, the echo of his revenge resounds with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, leading to the dispatch of two mounties to arrest him. In an ironic twist of fate, Mala stumbles upon the near-frozen mounties, saving their lives despite his growing mistrust of white men. Under the pretense of friendship, the mounties convince Mala to accompany them back to their base. There, shackled and injured, Mala discovers through a translator the grim possibility of his execution. Determined to return to his family and land, Mala masterminds a daring escape, stealing food and a dog sled team, and sets off into the arctic wilderness, with the mounties hot on his trail.
