Plot

When Elling, a delicate soul with dreams of poetry, is left alone in the world after his mother's death at the age of 40, he finds himself in the unfamiliar territory of a state-run institution. There, he crosses paths with Kjell Bjarne, a gentle behemoth in his 40s with a heart full of unrequited love and desire for the opposite sex. After a two-year companionship forged by their mutual dependency, they are set free with a state-provided apartment and a lifeline stipend, expected to navigate the world on their own. The seemingly mundane task of fetching groceries from a nearby store becomes a daunting challenge for these two. However, through their curious bond, the timid poet Elling and the enthusiastic, love-struck Kjell Bjarne not only learn to survive in the outside world, but they flourish. As they gain confidence, they devise unconventional strategies to integrate into society, creating the most unusual friendships in the least expected corners of their world. Their journey is a testament to human resilience, adaptability, and the power of friendship in overcoming life's formidable obstacles.
