Easy Land (2019)

In the emotionally charged feature debut, Easy Land, from director Sanja Zivkovic, we witness the heartrending struggle of recent refugees, Nina (Nina Kiri) and her mother Jasna (Mirjana Jokovic), as they attempt to construct a new existence in a foreign land. Bearing the haunting scars of her past in Serbia, Jasna is pushed into a spiral of despair by the degrading jobs she grudgingly accepts to keep a roof over their heads, despite being a skilled architect. Simultaneously, Nina grapples with the typical tribulations of teenage life, embittered by poverty and heightened by her mother's fragile mental wellbeing. To make matters more complex, an unsympathetic teacher forces Nina to serve an internship at a local theatre company as atonement for past misdemeanors. As the ghosts of their past refuse to rest, both women find it increasingly difficult to bridge their differences, pushing them towards the edge of their endurance. This touching narrative of Easy Land offers a raw exploration of the trials and tribulations faced by refugees in a new world.
