Plot
In the desolate landscape of Los Angeles, 2009, we find Arthur, a man grappling with the harsh reality of recent widowhood and the emptiness left by his long-deceased son. His savings, a casualty of his wife's illness, leaves him teetering on the brink of despair. However, a beacon of hope emerges in the form of a duckling he affectionately names Joe. Arthur's life is rejuvenated by this unlikely companionship, his days now filled with nurturing Joe and maintaining a pond nestled near his son's commemorative tree.
But as the city's last public park is sealed off and the pond drained, homelessness looms over Arthur, transforming his sanctuary into a mirage. Arthur's journey is punctuated by moments of profound unkindness, from the disdain of a bus driver to the cold, impersonal grip of animal control officers. Yet, he also encounters surprising pockets of compassion, offering and receiving kindness in a world that seems to have forgotten it.
In the face of adversity, Arthur and Joe embark on a heartfelt odyssey. A quest for water, meaning, and a place to call home propels them westwards, traversing the metaphorical desert that is L.A. With each step, they challenge the notion - is there room for angels, or ducks for that matter, in the sprawling urban wilderness of Los Angeles?
