In the frost-kissed landscape along the Dooman River, the borderland between North Korea and China, the film unfolds the poignant tale of two 12-year-old boys. Chang-ho, a Korean-Chinese child, resides on the Chinese side, his life resonating with the sober notes of survival. He soon crosses paths with a North Korean boy, a young immigrant brave enough to transcend boundaries in search of sustenance for his ailing sister. This fragile friendship is a beacon of hope amidst the heart-wrenching backdrop of starvation and death that haunts North Korea.
Their journey is further complicated by the tension that crackles between the borders, its ominous presence felt even in the quiet village. This palpable unease often mutates into incidents of persecution, rape, and insanity, casting an ominous shadow over their existence. Yet, in this vortex of misfortunes, Chang-ho's mute sister and wise grandfather become an unexpected lifeline, their resilience and understanding adding new dimensions to this relationship.
