Plot

In the quirky comedy, "Don't Give Up the Ship" (1959), John Paul Steckler VII, a hapless yet endearing naval officer who stems from a lineage of notorious naval blunders, finds himself in an unimaginable predicament. When the U.S. Navy requests a new appropriation from the government, they are stumped by the mysterious disappearance of a destroyer escort from their fleet. Steckler, the last man known to command the vessel, becomes the prime suspect. The conclusion of World War II had seen Steckler, the most junior officer aboard, saddled with the responsibility of sailing the ship back to the states for decommissioning. However, an unexpected encounter with Japanese soldiers unaware that the war had ended, and a subsequent mistaken report of his death, led his crew to desert him and the ship. Upon his return, the ship mysteriously vanished after he signed it out. Years later, the now-married Steckler is suddenly summoned by the formidable Admiral Bludde and Congressman Mandeville. He's presented with an ultimatum: locate the missing ship or face severe charges that could cost him dearly. The stakes are high, as he is not only racing against time to save his naval career but also trying to keep his new bride, Prudence, from discovering why he's missing from their honeymoon. Joined by the resourceful Ensign Benson, Steckler embarks on a hilariously chaotic quest to uncover the truth behind the vanishing vessel. "Don't Give Up the Ship" is a charming romp that navigates through the stormy seas of government politics, naval bureaucracy, and matrimonial mayhem.
