Divided We Fall (2000)

In the throes of World War II, within the confines of Nazi-occupied Czech Republic, a childless couple, Josef and Marie Cizek, are rendered helpless observers. They witness the tragic ordeal of their Jewish employers, the Wieners, as the Nazis first displace them from their home to a spare room in the Cizeks' residence, before cruelly deporting them to Theresienstadt concentration camp. As years unfurl, the young David Wiener, the only survivor of his family, miraculously escapes and seeks refuge with the Cizeks. Despite being acutely conscious of the lethal risk of sheltering a Jew in the Third Reich, the Cizeks choose humanity over self-preservation, providing David sanctuary from his grim destiny. This moral choice, however, casts a menacing shadow of Nazi discovery over them, with the peril amplified by their friend and Nazi sympathizer, Horst Prohazka, who harbors feelings for Marie. As the Cizeks grapple with the constant threat of exposure, they resort to desperate ingenuity and a generous sprinkling of luck, fiercely guarding their secret even as Horst's suspicions begin to stir. This harrowing journey compels them to make unconventional decisions, illuminating the true character of those who inhabit their world, and testing their courage and resilience to the limit.
