Plot

In the vibrant tapestry of life in India, Babu, portrayed by Dhanush, is a humble tea vendor who finds solace in his simple existence, peddling his milk tea on the bustling streets with his faithful bicycle. His life takes a captivating turn when he falls in love with Uma, a wealthy college girl played by Sridevi Vijaykumar. Amid the chaotic hustle and bustle, a tender love story unfolds as Uma gradually reciprocates Babu's affections, drawn to his genuine, good-natured spirit. However, their tranquil romance is disrupted when Uma's parents arrange her marriage to a wealthy, well-educated man named Bala. Torn between love and practicality, Uma envisages her future with Babu - a life marked by struggle, from giving birth in a government hospital to a constant battle with financial constraints. In contrast, a life with Bala promises comfort and luxury, where her every whim is catered to. While Babu embarks on a spiritual journey to Sabarimala, Uma succumbs to the lure of a comfortable life, choosing Bala over Babu. Upon learning of Uma's decision, Babu is deeply heartbroken, his pain exacerbated when Uma rebukes him vociferously for accusing her parents of influencing her decision. In a riveting turn of events, Babu files a lawsuit against Uma, accusing her of breaking her promise of sharing a lifetime together. The unusual case garners widespread attention, becoming the topic of fervent public discussion. As the courtroom drama unfolds, Babu's sacrifices for Uma are revealed, evoking a wave of sympathy and admiration for the humble tea vendor. Overwhelmed by guilt and regret, Uma decides to reunite with Babu on the final day of the hearing. However, in a poignant twist, Babu rejects her reconciliation attempts. He clarifies that his lawsuit was not a desperate plea to win her back but a lesson to her and every girl who prioritizes status over love. Babu shatters Uma's expectations by declaring that she might again despise him for his lowly status in the future. Leaving a stunned Uma in the courtroom, Babu parts with the only English phrase he knows, "Goodbye". "Devathayai Kanden" is a compelling exploration of love, sacrifice, and societal prejudices, where a simple tea vendor challenges the status quo, leaving audiences to ponder over the true essence of love and commitment.
