October Sky (1999)

Coalwood, West Virgina has seen better days. It's a dying mining town. Teenager Homer is inspired to leave and pursue a career in rocket science after seeing Sputnik orbit overhead. He and his friends start testing their own rockets. Their plan goes awry when the town officials accuse them of starting a forest fire with a rocket that crash landed. Homer's science teacher believes in their innocence and gives Homer the resources to help him prove it.
