Plot

In the bustling heart of Washington D.C., a wave of concern washes over the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as it grapples with the rising tide of illegal amphetamine usage among long-haul truckers. These pills, colloquially known as 'bennys' or 'co-pilots', provide an energy boost to the truck drivers, enabling them to defy sleep on their long, grueling journeys. However, the boon quickly morphs into a bane, ensnaring these drivers in a vicious cycle of dependency, hallucinations, and deadly crashes. Determined to stem this dangerous tide, the F.D.A. dispatches undercover investigator, Tom Kayler, on a covert mission to Los Angeles, the hotbed of this illicit amphetamine trade. Adopting the guise of a naive long-haul driver, Kayler infiltrates Bodmer Freight Lines, a local freight company, and rents a room in the charming abode of Val Owens, an attractive young widow who also houses other truck drivers. Among these boarders is Mink Reynolds, Kayler's cool and charismatic co-worker. As Kayler delves deeper into his investigation, he uncovers trails leading to Dunc Clayton's service station and Amy Phillips, a captivating waitress at the Six Points truck stop cafe. However, his relentless pursuit of the amphetamine kingpin doesn't go unnoticed. The shadowy figures behind the illegal drug industry, feeling the heat of his investigation, set their sights on eliminating the relentless Kayler. The plot thickens as Kayler races against time, walking a tightrope between unmasking the culprits and maintaining his own survival.
