Plot

In the heart of a family dedicated to the arts, Robert Leaf (James Stewart), a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, and his wife, Vina (Glynis Johns), steer their children, "Penny" (Cindy Carol) and Erasmus (Bill Mumy) on a course towards artistic expression. However, they are taken aback when they discover that Erasmus is not only tone-deaf and colorblind, but also a math prodigy, a trait in stark contrast to their artistic milieu. As Erasmus' unusual talent garners unwanted media attention, his parents send him to a psychiatrist, aiming to instill balance in his life. But the eight-year-old has a secret; he harbors a deep affection for Brigitte Bardot, penning her love letters funded by the earnings from doing his sister's friends' math homework. In an unexpected twist, Erasmus leverages his mathematical prowess to calculate bets for an illicit campus betting ring run by Penny's boyfriend, Ken Taylor (Fabian). This leads to a cloud of suspicion falling on Robert, prompting him to quit in a fit of anger. However, the chance encounter with Dr. Peregrine Upjohn (John Williams), an ardent admirer of Robert's work, introduces a new direction for Erasmus' skills. He persuades them to establish a foundation to support liberal arts scholarships. Initially opposed to Erasmus using his talents for placing bets, Robert and Vina acquiesce, seeing the foundation as a noble cause worth their support. Yet, through all these trials and tribulations, the young math prodigy's fixation on Brigitte Bardot remains, adding a touch of innocent infatuation to the intellectual whirlwind that is 'Dear Brigitte'.
