Plot

From the pulsating heart of the city to the languid rhythm of small-town Hargrove, sharp-witted teenager Caroline Wexler embarks on her senior year after a sudden move with her widowed father. As an industrial fire fiercely consumes the town's edge and a chilling white-suited serial killer stalks its adolescent girls, Caroline's life takes on a thrilling, unforeseen trajectory. Met with suspicion and thinly veiled resentment from the local girls and a group of ennui-ridden boys perpetually in a haze of drugs and household cleaners, Caroline's big city demeanor stands out. To combat her own creeping boredom, she sets her sights on a forbidden prize - Mr. Anderson, her English teacher. An aspiring novelist, Barry Anderson is a reluctant resident of Hargrove, having returned not from desire, but circumstance. To maintain a façade of normalcy, Caroline commences a simultaneous dalliance with Thurston Goldberg, a stoner classmate who falls for her, undeterred by the tragedy that marked their initial meeting. As a predatory killer continues his spree, and an inferno rages unabated, Caroline, Barry, and Thurston find themselves caught in a whirlwind of emotions and events that neither the confines of a classroom nor the boundaries of their small town can contain. With the new year ushering in unforeseen changes, they must either embrace maturity or face the dire consequences of their actions. Unfolding against the backdrop of a town in crisis, Daydream Nation is a compelling tale of love, danger, and the perilous journey of self-discovery.
