In the heart of a quaint country town, where secrets often lurk in the shadows of simplicity, resides Bubba Ritter, a man with the mind of a child. His innocent world revolves around the companionship of a young local girl, their bond pure and untainted. However, when the girl unknowingly trespasses the boundaries of a guarded house, she falls prey to a vicious dog attack. Bubba, in an act of heroism, rescues her but in a twist of fate, finds himself the target of a grave misunderstanding. In the throes of confusion and fear, Bubba conceals himself within the folds of a cornfield, donning the guise of an unassuming scarecrow. But his refuge turns into a death trap when he becomes the quarry of a vengeful posse, led by the town's postman, Otis P. Hazelrigg. Determined to take justice into their own hands, the vigilantes, blind to Bubba's innocence, sentence him to a cruel death. The truth of Bubba's heroism bubbles to the surface too late, but the wheels of justice have already been set in motion. With their deceitful plot exposed, the four vigilantes are acquitted, walking free from the courtroom into an existence haunted by the specter of their misdeeds.
