Plot
In the brooding heart of New York City, during the historic blackout of 2003, a young woman named Kate finds herself wrestling with the shadows of her past and the encroaching darkness of her present. A former model with a troubled history, Kate has just moved into the austere Brooklyn loft of her girlfriend, Leah, a thriving fashion photographer. Yet, beneath the veneer of their shared life, unsettling doubts about their relationship begin to stir, casting a pall over their love.
The plot thickens when Leah, plagued by the fear that Kate's feelings for her are waning, decides to take a temporary leave, visiting her family and leaving Kate alone. The solitude, however, is far from peaceful. New York plunges into an unprecedented, enduring blackout, immersing the city into an all-consuming darkness that seems to echo the depths of Kate's paranoia.
Isolated within the confined space of the loft, Kate starts to perceive a menacing presence lurking within the building, an unseen stalker prowling in the impenetrable black. With Leah unreachable and escape a daunting ordeal, Kate is forced into a chilling confrontation with her deepest fears.
The narrative spirals into a haunting vortex that resonates with Polanski's 'Repulsion', portraying a beautiful woman tormented by her unstable psyche and growing self-loathing. As the night stretches on, Kate's slow descent into paranoia and promiscuity paints a visceral tableau of fear and desperation, leading the story towards a subdued yet intensely gripping climax.
'Dark' is an atmospheric exploration of inner demons cloaked in the tangible darkness of a city in blackout, a movie that smolders its way into the psyche, leaving a lingering trace of suspense and dread.
