On the high seas, Charlie Chan, a passenger aboard an opulent ocean liner, finds himself entwined in a web of intrigue and danger. A treasury agent, hot on the trail of a South Pacific counterfeiting syndicate, confides in Chan about two recent attempts on his life. Despite Chan's efforts to shield him, the agent falls victim to a fatal knife attack in the ship's club room, leaving the mystery in Chan's capable hands. As the ship sails inexorably towards Samoa, Charlie is undeterred, confident he can unveil the murderer before docking. The suspect list is as varied as it is suspicious: a high-society reverend and his wife, a striking young woman carrying falsified documents, a brash, fast-talking salesman, a deceitful ship steward, and even a professional knife-thrower.
