Once a titan of theatre, Serge Tanneur (Fabrice Luchini) abruptly exited the stage of stardom, seeking refuge from the overwhelming pressures of fame. For three years, the Île de Ré has been his secluded sanctuary, his days consumed by solitary cycling trips across its wind-carved landscapes. Enter Gauthier Valence (Lambert Wilson), a fellow actor whose star is on the rise. He dreams of staging Molière's "The Misanthrope," with Serge playing the role of Filinte, a character mirroring Serge's own reclusive, world-weary existence.
