In the heart of World War II, Lt. Ward Stewart (Tyrone Power), a charismatic PT boat commander, finds himself reassigned to the U.S. submarine "Albacore" - a shift from his preferred mode of warfare. While adjusting to the confines of the sub, he reminisces about his enchanting encounters with the beautiful schoolteacher, Jean Hewlett (Anne Baxter) in the quiet town of New London, Connecticut.
