Plot

In the year 1609, in the mystical realm of Basque Country, nestled in the heart of Spain, a tale of fear, faith, and survival unfolds. Under the auspices of King Felipe III, Judge Rostegui, an unwavering representative of the Spanish Inquisition, embarks on a sacred crusade. With a group of soldiers and a notary by his side, he sets out to purge the region of any hint of witchcraft, traversing from one village to another, igniting pyres of judgement. Rostegui is driven by a relentless obsession to uncover the secrets of the infamous Sabbat, a supposedly wicked feast where witches not only summon The Devil but also pledge their fidelity and perform unholy unions. Despite widespread scepticism, Rostegui remains obstinate, convinced of the reality of this dark ritual. The judge's quest leads him to an unnamed coastal village, deserted by men who are out at sea. Here, five young women - Ana, Olaia, María, Maider, and the youthful Katalin - are apprehended without explanation. Subjected to brutal interrogations and horrid torture, they are coerced into confessing their alleged witchcraft and revealing the secrets of the Sabbat. As Maider endures the horrifying ordeal of being shaved bald and ruthlessly tortured in search of the elusive Satan's seal, a panic-stricken Ana devises a plan. She persuades the others to fabricate the details of the Sabbat, banking on the hope that their fathers would return with the full moon tide in a week's time. Ana, the perceived centerpiece of Rostegui's suspicions, wields her knowledge of Basque traditions and popular songs to weave a spellbinding tale, aiming to buy them time. As the girls immerse themselves in their invented narrative, uncertainty creeps into Rostegui's mind. He begins to question the authenticity of their claims and the true intent behind their sudden willingness to stage the Sabbat. "Coven" is a compelling tale of survival and the power of imagination against a backdrop of fear and fanaticism. It paints a vivid picture of a time where accusation could mean death, and where the will to live could spawn the most captivating tales.
