Plot

In a future where the world's cities are tightly controlled by the totalitarian government known as the Sphinx, life feels like a dystopian dream. The world, a fusion of languages and cultures, is divided between those with 'papeles' - special travel permits, and the non-citizens, forced to eke out a primitive existence in sprawling shanty towns swallowed by the desert. Into this stark reality steps William Geld (Tim Robbins), a government investigator and family man, dispatched to Shanghai on a mission to uncover a case of fraudulent IDs. The prime suspect is enigmatic Maria Gonzales (Samantha Morton), an employee at the Sphinx. Despite her evident guilt, William finds himself irresistibly drawn to her, the two becoming entwined in a passionate, illicit affair that lasts only as long as his visa: a fleeting twenty-four hours. He conceals her crime, but the memory of Maria haunts him upon his return home, and he becomes consumed by his obsession with her. When the investigation reopens a week later, William is sent back to Shanghai to complete his unfinished work. He seeks out Maria, only to find the harsh reality of their situation: they've violated Code 46, a stringent genetic regulation imposed by the government to control relationships. Their love is not only forbidden but genetically impossible, leading to a heart-wrenching discovery that challenges the tenets of love, identity, and humanity in this brave new world.
