Plot

In the meticulously ordered world of Frank Allen, an efficiency expert whose life is a mirror reflection of his work, organization reigns supreme. His wife Susan, an elementary school teacher, shares his love for structure, a stark contrast to their friend, the impulsive and philandering Buddy Endrow. Frank's life is ruled by to-do lists and priority cards, faithfully believing that his method can bring happiness to others as it has to him. However, the universe has other plans. Eight years into Frank's harmonious marriage with Susan, two unexpected events unfold in quick succession, triggering a string of misunderstandings that threaten to shatter their loving family unit, comprised of themselves and their daughter Jesse. These revelations force Frank to reconsider his rigid outlook on life, challenging his belief in the power of order and control. Years later, on the morning of Jesse's wedding, Frank finds himself sharing his past with Ed, Jesse's fiancé. Despite knowing little about Ed, Frank suspects that he might not be the best match for his daughter. With the echoes of Ed's doubts about the upcoming marriage, Frank narrates the tumultuous turn his life took on that fateful day eight years ago, hoping to influence Ed's decision about the wedding and his perspective on marriage as a whole. The story Frank unfolds is a whirlwind of missed ferries, corporate groupies, panicked mothers-to-be, and alarming medical tests; it's a tale that brings Frank's marriage to the brink of a crisis. Amidst the chaos, Frank, Susan, Jesse, and the carefree Buddy find themselves at a lake, a shotgun in Frank's hand, and a decision that could permanently cross something off his meticulously curated list. "Chaos Theory" (2008) is a captivating exploration of whether there's room for whim and chaos in a life dominated by structure and predictability. It's a story that unravels the unexpected turns life can take, challenging the notion that happiness can be achieved solely through order and organization.
