In the gripping tale of "Calling Dr. Gillespie" (1942), our eponymous hero is summoned by his old confidante Emma Hope, the stern yet caring head of an elite girls' academy. A shadow of concern hovers over one of Emma's pupils, Marcia Bradburn, who is romantically entangled with Roy Todwell, a young man whose unpredictability is escalating dangerously. Cursed with a volatile temper, Todwell is a ticking time bomb, exploding into fits of violence at the slightest provocation.
Joining forces with his professional ally, Dr. Gerniede, Dr. Gillespie dives headfirst into the labyrinth of Todwell's psyche, diagnosing him with a severe mental disorder. However, their attempt to alert Todwell's parents is met with denial and resistance, as they favor their own doctor's dismissive stance on psychiatry as mere fanciful nonsense. As their pleas fall on deaf ears, Todwell's condition spirals out of control.
