Plot

Set against the backdrop of 1977 Paris, the world-renowned diva Maria Callas (Fanny Ardant) finds herself secluded within the confines of her apartment. The once vibrant echo of her voice has dulled due to time and strain, leaving her a mere specter of her former glory. Her old friend, the cunning producer Larry Kelly (Jeremy Irons), presents a tempting offer: a televised rendition of "Carmen." Aware of Maria's vocal decline, Larry devises a clever ruse to preserve her reputation. In spite of the cautionary words from her confidante, Sarah Keller (Dame Joan Plowright), Maria agrees to partake in the charade and the performance is a resounding triumph. Riding this wave of success, Larry contemplates a fresh adaptation of "Tosca." However, Maria finds herself at odds with the deceit this time. Her refusal to partake in the subterfuge sets off a series of events that will etch the final strokes in the illustrious saga of this legendary soprano. Thus, "Callas Forever" (2002) paints a portrait of the twilight years of a revered diva, grappling with the fading echoes of her past and the consequential choices of her present.
