Plot

As the echoes of World War I fade in 1918, the quaint town of Milburn, Indiana, eagerly awaits the return of twenty-year-old Bill Sherman, especially the sprightly tomboy, Margie Winfield. Once seen through skeptical eyes, Bill, having matured through the crucible of war, has now won the approval of Margie's banker father, George Winfield, who anticipates their impending nuptials. However, Bill's newfound wisdom prompts him to postpone the wedding, aspiring first to amass a financial safety net for their future life together. Margie consents, but her agreement does not extend to her remaining idle, leading to a clash of principles that threatens their union. The ever-watchful and opportunistic Chester Finley hovers on the sidelines, his sights set on Margie's hand in marriage. Simultaneously, the Winfield household is ensnared in a web of misunderstandings and suspicions when Margie, her precocious younger brother Wesley, and their housekeeper Stella discover what appears to be a clandestine love note from George to a visiting French actress, Renee LaRue. As the family battles with mistrust and potential heartache, Margie, Wesley, and Stella strive to preserve their familial harmony, especially as George and his wife approach their twentieth wedding anniversary. This turmoil makes Margie question the very institution of marriage, even as she confronts her own romantic dilemmas. Through a tapestry of love, ambition, and family ties, "By the Light of the Silvery Moon" paints a vibrant picture of a family in post-war America, grappling with change and uncertainty, and above all, the intricate dance of love and duty.
