Immersed in the entrancing southern coast of Vietnam, amid the throes of French colonial rule in the 1940s, Buffalo Boy tells the tale of Kim, a 15-year-old boy. The omnipresent water, a paradoxical symbol of life, decay, and rot, is the backdrop to his coming-of-age journey. Kim's family, subsistence rice farmers, depend on their two buffalo for survival. However, the relentless rains of the monsoon season leave the buffalo on the brink of starvation.
Braving the elements, Kim embarks on a quest inland in search of sustenance for their beasts. His journey is far from simple; he witnesses the harsh realities of life – the unfair treatment of women, the violent disputes between men, and the crushing weight of French taxation on the impoverished.
Kim finds employment with Lap, a seasoned buffalo herder whose mysterious past weaves threads with Kim's own family history.
