Bol (2011)

In the throes of a verdict from Pakistan's courts, Zainub Khan stands on the precipice of her demise, her life to be cut short by the hangman's noose. Her final request is not for mercy, but for a chance to share her tale with the world. Granted this, she unfolds the saga of her family's upheaval from Delhi in 1948, their resettlement in Lahore. It is here that her father, Hakim Sayed Hashmutallah Khan, marries Suraiya, a woman who becomes the mother of seven daughters, each birth an arrow piercing their father's hope for a son. But the eighth birth breaks the pattern—not with a boy, but a hermaphrodite child named Saifullah. Suraiya safeguards this secret to protect her husband's honor, hiring a private tutor to educate him within the confines of their home. When Zainub, scarred by a failed marriage, returns to this home, she discovers the tutor's nefarious acts on her brother, leading her to cast him out. In the wake of diminishing family funds, Saifullah is driven to the harsh world of labor, only to be sexually abused and tragically slain by his own father. The latter, a desperate man, manipulates his position as a Khajanchi at a local Masjid, swindling Rs.2 Lakhs to bribe the police. To repay this debt, he turns to the children of prostitutes, offering them education with the assistance of Saqa Kanjar. When a marriage proposal from their Shia neighbor's son, Mustafa, arrives for their daughter, Ayesha, Hakim fiercely rejects it, favoring an older suitor. However, Saqa's unexpected proposition throws their lives into turmoil, triggering a cascade of events that will alter their existence forever.
