Plot

In "Bernard and Huey," a film steeped in the legacy of Jules Feiffer's timeless 1957 Village Voice comic strip characters, we're presented with a unique story of friendship, love, and self-discovery, all wrapped in a screenplay penned by Feiffer himself back in 1986. Director Dan Mirvish, co-founder of Slamdance, breathes new life into this project, with an ensemble cast including Oscar-winner Jim Rash, Richard Kind, Nancy Travis, Sasha Alexander, Bellamy Young, and Mae Whitman, to name a few. The narrative unfolds with the youthful exploits of Huey, the charming womanizer, and his socially awkward best friend, Bernard. A leap in time of 25 years places us in the heart of New York, where Bernard now thrives as a successful bachelor. His life takes an unexpected turn when Huey, now seemingly a shadow of his former self, turns up on his doorstep. As the two reignite their friendship, Bernard finds himself drawn to Zelda, Huey's estranged daughter and an aspiring cartoonist. Simultaneously, Huey begins to recapture his old charisma, attempting to charm the women in Bernard's life, such as Roz, his on-again-off-again girlfriend, and Mona, a work colleague. Zelda's treatment of Bernard mirrors Huey's approach to women, leading the two old friends to slip back into their established roles; Huey as the ladies' man, Bernard as the wallflower. Throughout their journey, Huey finds solace in reunions with his ex-wife, Aggie, his brother Marty, and a renewed connection with Zelda. In a surprising twist of fate, Bernard is left contemplating the possibility of settling down with a woman his own age. "Bernard and Huey" is a captivating exploration of life's complexities, seasoned with humor, nostalgia, and a dash of the unexpected.
