Beginning of the End (1957)

In the heartland of Illinois, Audrey Ames, an intrepid reporter, stumbles upon an enigma wrapped in military secrecy. While driving along the highway, she is stopped and informed of a small town's inexplicable destruction, its inhabitants vanished without a trace. Intrigued, Audrey ventures towards a secretive lab, run by the Department of Agriculture, and meets the lab's enigmatic director, Dr. Ed Wainwright. Wainwright reveals a chilling truth. Unusual occurrences have been plaguing the lab since a swarm of seemingly innocuous grasshoppers trespassed into a silo brimming with radioactive wheat. An accidental experiment that has triggered a monstrous transformation. These once harmless grasshoppers have mutated into gigantic, ravenous locusts, not only consuming the local flora but also developing an unsettling hunger for human flesh. As the horror unfolds, the mutant locusts set their countless eyes on Chicago, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. The military, helpless against the relentless swarm, contemplates the unthinkable - to decimate the city with an atom bomb, a solution as monstrous as the problem itself. In a race against time, Audrey, Wainwright, and a stoic military officer must unravel a way to halt the advancing horde of colossal insects. Will they find an alternative solution or will the city of Chicago fall prey to the Beginning of the End?
