Plot

In the haunting aftermath of World War II, the remnants of 1945 Leningrad lie as a poignant testament to a city once vibrant, now shattered. Amongst the rubble and ruin, the echo of an ended siege hums through the battle-scarred streets and the broken hearts of its people. Here, in this ghostly tableau, we find Iya, a young nurse at the city's veterans hospital. Nicknamed the 'Beanpole' for her towering stature, Iya is a pale, shy figure, perpetually locked in a struggle with the invisible chains of post-traumatic stress disorder. As the city grapples with its physical and mental wounds, Iya's solitary existence is disrupted by the unexpected arrival of Masha, her only friend and a battle-scarred soldier, fresh from the frontlines. Her presence serves as a harrowing reminder that while the enemy has retreated, the war's echo lingers, resonating in the ruins and in their souls. Out of the ashes of devastation, the narrative of 'Beanpole' unfolds, a tale of two young women navigating their way through the labyrinth of survival. Iya and Masha, bound by shared trauma and a desperate hope for renewal, embark on a quest to reconstruct their shattered lives amidst the city's ruins. In the face of post-apocalyptic desolation, their friendship becomes a beacon of solace, a flicker of light in the enveloping darkness. From the acclaimed director of TESNOTA, Kantemir Balagov paints a powerful period drama, a narrative of resilience and rebirth in a world where life and death continue their unrelenting dance. 'Beanpole' is a heartrending exploration of the indomitable human spirit, a testament to the power of friendship and a stark reminder that the past, though buried, is never truly forgotten. Can the traumas of peace ever heal? As Iya and Masha discover, the path to recovery winds through the most unexpected landscapes.
