Bad Boy (1939)

In the sleepy tranquility of his hometown, Johnny Fraser (Johnny Downs) bides farewell to his mother (Helen MacKellar) and steps into the pulsating heart of the city. He earns himself a spot in a prestigious architectural firm, drawn into its labyrinth of ambition and competition. His colleague, the flamboyant Steve Carson (Archie Robbins) lures him into the seductive world of horse racing, flaunting his winnings like a peacock's plumage. However, Johnny's luck doesn't mirror Steve's, leading him to pilfer from the firm's coffer to cover his losses. Steve, the puppeteer, then entangles Johnny in the web of Madelon Kirby (Rosalind Keith), a night club singer with a heart of gold - or so it seems. When the firm's stern boss, McNeil (Holmes Herbert), discovers Johnny's financial misdemeanors, he is promptly dismissed and incarcerated. Emerging from prison with hope dwindling, Johnny finds himself jobless, until his path crosses with Steve once again. Now leading a dubious firm known as Business Engineers, Johnny begins to see the glimmer of prosperity. Love, or what he believes to be, reenters his life in the form of Madelon. Unbeknownst to him, the treacherous Steve is pulling strings, manipulating both his business and his relationship with Madelon. Johnny's journey from innocence to the darker alleys of life forms the crux of this gripping tale.
