Plot

In the vibrant canvas of life, Anu (Sujatha) is a jubilant spirit, deeply in love with her boyfriend. Her tranquil existence is disrupted when her father's job transfer uproots her to Mumbai (formerly Bombay). As her letters to her lover go unanswered, her love life crumbles, layering a melancholic shade over her life. Further hardships strike when her father falls ill, and Ramanathan (Rajnikanth), a colleague from her father's office, emerges as her newfound backbone. Ramanathan extends a marriage proposal, and Anu, grateful for his support, accepts, revealing her past love affair that has seemingly faded. However, she soon finds herself ensnared in a marriage marked by cruelty and jealousy. Ramanathan's sadistic nature prompts her to seek divorce, and she embarks on a journey to Chennai (Madras) as a single mother, hoping for a fresh start. Life in Chennai unfurls a comforting blanket with a supportive circle of friends at her new job. Among them is the enigmatic widower, Janardhan a.k.a Johnnie (Kamal Hassan), a gifted ventriloquist who communicates through his puppet, Junior. Love blossoms in Janardhan's heart for Anu, but he struggles to express his feelings. Adding a dash of intrigue, her ex-husband's mother discovers Anu's presence in Chennai and begins working as her maid. Anu's life takes another surprising turn when she crosses paths with her old lover, uncovering that their communication was intercepted by his mentally-challenged sister. As she reignites her old romance, it seems life is finally smiling upon her. However, shadows of her past creep back in as Ramanathan re-enters her life in Chennai, now as her boss. A repentant Ramanathan seeks redemption and proposes remarriage to Anu. This spirals into a complex love quadrangle with her ex-lover, her remorseful ex-husband, and her silent admirer, creating a labyrinth of emotions, choices, and dramatic twists.
