Plot

In the early years of the twentieth century, the Krichinsky family, Polish-Jewish immigrants, began their journey towards the American dream, making their home in Avalon, an immigrant hub within the heart of Baltimore, Maryland. They brought with them a rich tapestry of traditions, including a robust family network marked by generations living under a single roof and vital family decisions being made collectively, a practice they lovingly referred to as the family circle. Despite their strong cultural roots, the allure of the American dream soon entices the second and third generations. Drawn by the prospect of assimilation into American culture, they adopt Anglicized versions of their family name, transforming into the Kayes and the Kirks. Their dreams extend beyond the boundaries of their community, reaching for success and prosperity through the ownership of thriving businesses of their own choosing, rather than simply inheriting the family trade. They yearn for the quintessential suburban home, housing only their immediate family, and the symbol of modern prosperity - a television. These aspirations, however, clash with the ideals of the older generation, creating a friction that reverberates through their family circle meetings. Yet, in spite of the discord, life within the evolving Krichinsky/Kaye/Kirk family continues, painting a vivid portrait of immigrant life and the pursuit of the American dream. This is a compelling tale of a family's journey, a microcosm of the immigrant experience, and their relentless pursuit of a better future in the so-called promised land.
