An Unseen Enemy (1912)

In the quaint aftermath of their father's demise, two young sisters and their elder brother find themselves the guardians of their late father's modest estate. The brother, embodying the mantle of responsibility, successfully liquidates a portion of this inheritance, returning home with the cash in hand. As nightfall descends, and banking hours end, he stows the money safely away in their father's household safe, promising his sisters a glimpse of the finer things in life. However, as soon as he departs for his distant office, their unkempt housemaid, having observed the money's placement, hatches a scheme. Unable to crack the safe's combination, she enlists the aid of a criminal associate, a shadow from her past. As they toil away at the safe, the sisters find themselves trapped in the sitting room, their fear heightened by the maid brandishing a menacing firearm through a hole in the wall. Despite the palpable terror, the sisters exhibit a streak of resourcefulness. They use the telephone, a beacon of hope in their locked chamber, to call their brother in the village. He receives the distress call, a chilling interruption to his work, and immediately springs into action.
