Plot

In the tempestuous spring of 1942, following a daring blockade run that ferried General Douglas MacArthur and his team from the Philippines to the sanctuary of Australia, the survivors of a demolished and sunken PT boat navigate their way to the coastline. The captain imparts them with priority passes, promising safety if they can traverse the treacherous two hundred miles to Del Monte airfield, and urges them to pair off for survival. Ensign Chuck Palmer and crewman Jim Mitchell, against all odds, make a valiant arrival at Tacloban, situated on the island of Leyte. In the heart of an American mission school, Palmer crosses paths with the spirited Jeanne Martinez, who is desperately seeking help for a relative and brings news of the Japanese seizing control of the airfield. Palmer's audacious attempt to reach Australia by boat is thwarted by a savage tropical storm, forcing him to battle the waves to shore. Throughout the harrowing year of 1942, Palmer and his fellow survivors masterfully evade enemy patrols, sustaining themselves on the land's sparse bounty, while they cling on to hope in the shadow of war.
