Plot

In the year 1876, amidst the tumultuous backdrop of Spain's Third Carlist War, a secluded valley in the Basque Country harbors a church doubling as an orphanage for girls. A cruel twist of fate sees the sanctuary obliterated by a bombing, annihilating its inhabitants save for one little girl, left wounded and desolate. The survivor's bleak future brightens in an unexpected form: a mysterious woman promising the power of healing in exchange for eternal companionship. The girl, swayed by the promise of survival, agrees and is transformed into a vampire. Her savior, whom she affectionately names 'Mother', inducts her into a secretive vampire coven, training her to shroud in the night, subsist on the blood of fallen soldiers, and evade the scorching sun. Their tranquil existence is threatened when local villagers, hell-bent on wiping out the vampires, discover their secret haven. A chaotic escape ensues, during which the girl plunges off a cliff and finds herself abandoned in the wilderness. Here, she learns to fend for herself, hunting animals and gradually exposing herself to sunlight to build immunity against it. A decade later, the girl, known as Amaia, is discovered by a grieving widower named Cándido, who takes her in despite the wary glances from the town's priest, Don Sebastián. All the while, Amaia dreams of reuniting with Mother. Attempting to assimilate into human society, Amaia forms a bond with a local boy named Miguel while battling her primal instincts that breed unease in the town. Suspicion mounts, and Don Sebastián becomes convinced that Amaia is possessed, necessitating an exorcism. Cándido rescues Amaia, and they flee to another town. However, the passage of fifty years leaves Amaia alone once again after Cándido's death, her immortality a harsh reminder of her eternal solitude. The year 1936 brings with it the Spanish Civil War and with it, the resurgence of figures from Amaia's past. During her nocturnal scavenging, she crosses paths with an older Miguel and, remarkably, the one person she thought she'd lost forever – Mother. This haunting saga is a journey of survival, adaptation, and the relentless quest for belonging, immersing viewers in a world where history and fantasy converge.
