In the quiet tranquility of her affluent widowhood, Cary Scott leads a life defined by the small circle of friends she entertains and the fleeting visits from her grown-up children. Her existence, though not unhappy, is marked by a monotony she's barely conscious of, a routine that her friend Sara Warren believes could be remedied with the companionship of a television set. Yet even this suggestion fails to stir Cary from the stillness of her life. Then, like the seasonal bloom of her garden, Ron Kirby comes into her world. A young, vibrant nurseryman, Ron visits Cary's home twice a year to tend to her trees. His free-spirited nature and his disregard for societal conventions captivate Cary, leading to an unexpected romance that blossoms amidst the trimmed branches and rustling leaves of her garden. Their love, however, is like a pebble thrown into the placid waters of Cary's life, causing ripples of surprise and disapproval among her friends. The age difference, the class disparity, and the gossip of the country club set become obstacles in their path. Even her children, embarrassed by their mother's unconventional relationship, voice vehement objections. Torn between her own happiness and the comfort of her traditional world, Cary decides to sacrifice her newfound love for the sake of her children's approval. But as time passes, and the visits from her children become less and less frequent, Cary begins to question the wisdom of her sacrifice. Surrounded by the echoes of her empty house, she is forced to reassess her choices, her relationship with her children, and her right to love and be loved, regardless of societal norms.
