Plot

In the heat of World War II, beneath the ashes of a bombed Rome on July 19, 1943, Cesira, a captivating widow and successful grocery store owner, decides to escape the constant threat of annihilation. Fear for the safety of her 13-year-old daughter, Rosetta, propels them on a journey to Cesira's rustic birthplace in Ciociaria. Amid this rugged mountainous sanctuary, they seek refuge from the horrors of war. As they adapt to a life of scarcity and uncertainty, they cross paths with Michele di Libero, the village's charismatic young intellectual who finds himself entranced by the resilient Cesira. Torn between his tender advances and her relentless pursuit of survival for her young girl, Cesira remains oblivious to his affections. However, Michele represents a beacon of normalcy and a promise of a loving home they could return to after the war. As the war continues to rage and the allies advance, drawn by the hope of a peaceful life and the desire to reclaim what was lost, Cesira makes the courageous decision to return to Rome. Unbeknownst to them, the city is a shadow of its former self, revealing the true face of war's desolation. Will they find solace in the ruins, or will the aftermath of the Great War shatter their dreams of normality? The journey of these two women is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit amidst the chaos and tragedy of war.
