Plot

Amid the stifling constraints of 19th-century Dublin lies a tale of survival and self-discovery. Albert Nobbs, a mysterious individual of middle age, leads an unassuming life as a waiter at Morrison's Hotel, under the iron-fisted rule of Marge Baker. Albert's life is one of humble ambition, scrimping and saving every penny in hopes of escaping the hotel's oppressive grasp and owning a business. One day, Albert's life is disrupted when a man named Hubert Page arrives at the hotel. The seemingly mundane task of painting a room takes an unexpected turn when Hubert is forced to share Albert's bed, uncovering a secret that Albert has zealously guarded - Albert is a woman in disguise, living a lie to secure a livelihood in a world that stifles women's independence. Rather than recoiling from Albert's secret, Hubert offers an alternate path, a life akin to his own with his wife Cathleen - a life of companionship and emotional support. Inspired, Albert's gaze falls on Helen Dawes, a young and vivacious co-worker who, unbeknownst to him, is entangled in a clandestine relationship with the crafty Joe Mackins, a recent addition to Morrison's staff. As Albert, Helen, and Joe weave their intricate dance of courtship, Albert grapples with the complexities of his newfound path. Struggling to navigate the delicate intricacies of love and identity, Albert finds that the path to true selfhood is far from easy. This compelling tale explores the struggle between societal norms and personal freedom, enveloped in the rich tapestry of 19th-century Ireland.
