Plot

In the heart of a parched land, stricken by a decade-long drought, a grand prayer ceremony is underway. The goal is to appease Devraj Indra (Amitabh Bachchan), the divine custodian of rain, in hopes of revitalizing their dying region. This ritual is led by the stern Parvasu (Jackie Shroff), elder son of the reverend sage Raibhya (Mohan Agashe), who has dedicated seven relentless years to the sacred fire, abandoning earthly pleasures and his radiant wife, Vishakha (Raveena Tandon). Meanwhile, Arvasu (Milind Soman), Parvasu's younger brother, is entangled in a forbidden love affair with the tribal girl, Nittilai (Sonali Kulkarni). As a Brahmin, he must confront Nittilai's village elders to marry outside his caste, a customary challenge he willingly embarks upon. Concurrently, their cousin Yavakri (Nagarjuna), returns from a ten-year spiritual quest in the jungle, armed with the gift of universal knowledge. In a vengeful twist, Yavakri seduces the neglected Vishakha, triggering a cataclysmic chain of events. The undercurrent of resentment and suspicion surfaces when Raibhya, convinced of his daughter-in-law's infidelity, invokes a demon (Prabhu Deva) to eliminate the suitor, Yavakri. The aftermath shrouds the family in tragedy and accusation, with Arvasu wrongfully blamed and left for dead. His love, Nittilai, becomes a fugitive, hunted by her own kin. Amidst this chaos, the celestial Devraj Indra is eventually appeased, and Arvasu is granted a single wish. With love and loss etched on his heart, Arvasu's only desire is to resurrect Nittilai. The film, adapted from Girish Karnad's play "The Fire and the Rain," and steeped in the mythology of the Indian epic, the Mahabharata, leaves us with a poignant question: Will Devraj Indra bend the course of history and grant Arvasu's wish? This is a saga of love, sacrifice, and redemption, where purity blossoms amidst the ashes of ruin.
