After the Storm (2001)

Set in the heart of 1933, After the Storm follows Arno, an American transplant living a life of humble simplicity in Bimini, Bahamas. His only keepsake, a broken pocket watch, once belonged to his late father. Arno, a beachcomber by trade, survives off the sea's bounty and his intimate knowledge of the waters. Although his expertise could bring him wealth, he holds a firm line against illicit activities, causing him to avoid the shady Ortega. Local men regard Arno with suspicion, labeling him a "pelican" and questioning his reliability. Yet, Arno's charisma and striking good looks draw women to him like a beacon. His complex love life encompasses Janine, the overlooked wife of a boat charterer, Jean-Pierre, who is too occupied with his wealthy clients to notice his wife's affair. Arno's decision to end their relationship further hardens Janine's already cynical perspective on life. His choice is influenced by the return of Coquina, a naive local Irish girl he had always longed for, who has been absent for three years. Arno hopes to rekindle their lost romance, dreaming of a simple life with her. Their tranquil existence is shattered when a storm leaves behind a sunken yacht, the Pride of Chicago, carrying the lifeless bodies of the affluent Gavotte family. Arno, who was nearly ensnared in a drug-related scandal due to his last job for the Gavottes, knows the vessel houses a trove of precious jewels. This unexpected fortune could provide him the fresh start he yearns for with Coquina. However, the path to this newfound wealth forces him into a precarious alliance with Jean-Pierre. Arno holds the knowledge of the wreck's location, while Jean-Pierre owns the necessary diving gear. This arrangement pulls Janine and Coquina into a vortex of deceit and potential violence, as each has their own vision of how to distribute the treasure. With the threat of Ortega, who wouldn't hesitate to claim their lives for the jewels, and their own conflicting agendas, they must navigate a stormy sea of greed and betrayal. Their pursuit of the sunken riches could either unite them or tear them apart in their quest for a new beginning.
