In the gritty reality of a single-room tenement apartment, eighteen-year-old Selina D'Arcey navigates a life of bleak confinement, a world darkened by an accident caused by her part-time prostitute mother, Rose-Ann, when Selina was only five. A life spent in the shadows of her quarrelsome, alcoholic grandfather, Ole Pa, and her abusive mother, Selina's existence is fraught with the monotonous tasks of cleaning, cooking, and stringing beads for the meager income it provides. Uneducated and shielded from the world, she's unaware of the life she's been denied. When Selina's world collides with that of Gordon Ralfe, a compassionate, educated young man, in the local park one day, her life takes an unexpected turn. Despite her mother's relentless cruelty and her grandfather's indifference, the park becomes Selina's refuge, a place where she meets Gordon and discovers a reality beyond the stifling walls of her apartment.
