A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy (1982)

In the gentle transition from the 19th to the 20th century, we find ourselves in the secluded New York woodland cottage of Andrew, a Wall Street investment advisor with a penchant for inventing novelty items, and his stoic wife Adrian. Their marriage, currently marred by Adrian's psychological resistance to intimacy, is strained to the breaking point. Desperate for a respite from their stagnant relationship, they invite two intriguing couples to their summer retreat. One-half of the guests is Maxwell, Andrew's best friend and a notorious womanizer who leverages his profession as a doctor to seduce his patients. He brings along his new, seemingly naive nurse, Dulcy, whose sexual prowess belies her innocent exterior. The other half is composed of Leopold, Adrian's worldly philosophy professor cousin, and his much younger fiancée Ariel, who hides a secret past with Andrew. This peculiar ensemble convenes at the cottage for a weekend of emotional, intellectual, and sexual entanglements. Maxwell, struck by love at first sight, cannot bear Ariel's impending marriage to the pompous Leopold. Leopold, on the brink of surrendering his bachelorhood, seeks one last adventurous fling with the willing Dulcy. Adrian, desperate to rekindle her marriage to Andrew, covertly seeks Dulcy's advice on matters of the bedroom. Meanwhile, Andrew and Ariel, former lovers who never crossed the threshold of intimacy, grapple with lingering feelings and what-ifs. Each person carries a hidden agenda, their desires threatened by the prying eyes of their fellow guests. Yet, the enchanting woodland setting may just hold the answers to their conundrums. Will they manage to untangle their romantic knots, or will their desires lead to disaster?
