Plot

Set in the turbulent period following the death of General Franco, 'A March to Remember' (2019) weaves a rich tapestry of intersecting lives in Vitoria, the capital of Alava in the Basque Country. As Spain teeters on the brink of a fragile democracy, stubborn Francoists refuse to relinquish their hold on the past, which sets the stage for a gripping narrative. Begoña, a 16-year-old girl from a modest family, dreams of a brighter future. Her family includes her father José Luis, a local radio journalist; her mother Ana, who supplements their income by giving private lessons; her younger brother Aitor, and Loli, their housemaid. Begoña finds herself drawn to the escalating labor protests, led by the charismatic Mikel and his friends, Roberto, Ramón, and Blanca. Simultaneously, Ana becomes embroiled in the struggle when Loli's husband, Esteban, is detained on suspicion of organizing the riots. Eduardo, a mediator between the old guard bosses and the laborers, attempts to quell the unrest for his own benefit. In a desperate bid to help Esteban, Ana seeks Eduardo's assistance, triggering a chain of events that lead to José Luis being blackmailed by Eduardo into promoting fake news to incite discord amongst the laborers, with the threat of Begoña's arrest hanging over him. Begoña, mistakenly believing her father to be a traitor, leaves home to live with Mikel, and together they rally the laborers to stage a nationwide general strike. As the tension mounts and the date approaches March 3, the Governor of Basque Country receives a chilling command: prevent the strike at any cost. The narrative hurtles towards a fateful collision as the personal and political intertwine, the consequences of which will irrevocably alter the lives of everyone involved. 'A March to Remember' is a compelling exploration of a nation in transition and the ordinary people caught in its wake.
