Plot

In the quiet solitude of a provincial town, we meet Matsutaro Yasuda, a former high school principal grappling with the harsh realities of retirement, a broken family, and lingering grief over the loss of his wife to alcoholism. His new home is an aging apartment, where the echo of his past mingles with the poignant tale of a five-year-old neighbor, Sachi. Sachi is an enigma, a small girl who clings to the iron fence of their shared dwelling, her eyes fixed on the distant horizon. Despite the chill of winter, she's clad in a simple summer dress, her feet bare, and angel wings made of cardboard adorn her back. Her quiet demeanor, marred by the visible signs of abuse on her legs, draws Yasuda in despite his best efforts to remain detached. Nightfall brings an unwelcome symphony of violent arguments from Sachi's home, a haunting reminder of her reality which seeps into Yasuda's existence. Initially, he attempts to block out the harsh noises, the heart-wrenching sight of Sachi, yet something stirs within him—a spark of passion, a sliver of empathy. Yasuda finds an unexpected connection with Sachi, their shared emptiness reflected in each other's eyes. He asks her about the simple pleasures of life, about a blue sky speckled with cotton candy clouds, and a white bird soaring freely. He invites her on a simple journey, a walk, which she accepts, marking the beginning of their shared adventure. During their travels, they cross paths with Wataru, a seemingly carefree young boy hiding his own loneliness behind a veneer of nonchalance. Wataru becomes an integral part of their journey, adding a new dimension to their walk. However, their journey takes an unforeseen turn when Sachi slowly begins to trust Yasuda and Wataru, her heart unfolding like a long-closed flower. The cardboard angel wings she carries with her start to flutter towards a real sky, symbolizing a journey that transcends the physical, into the realm of healing and hope.
