Once a dedicated sergeant in the US Marines, Terry Pulaski now finds himself a weary drifter, haunted by the shrapnel of war that saw him medically discharged from active duty. His once bustling life, filled with the warmth of his schoolteacher wife Beth and their young daughter Alice, has been replaced by the solitary existence of a mobile trailer parked in the backyard of his old friend Javier. A decade of living on the fringes, battling physical and emotional torment, leads Terry to abandon his family, feeling more like a burden than a patriarch. Yet, he manages to eke out an existence, running a humble repair service from his trailer and intermittently sending money to Alice. In this barren landscape of his life, a glimmer of companionship shines through in the form of Duke, a faithful border collie who wandered into the Pulaskis' lives one fateful day. Duke becomes Terry's lifeline, his solace, his only reason to brave the despairs of each passing day. However, when Duke falls seriously ill, Terry's world teeters on the brink of collapse yet again. Lacking the resources for vet care, Terry leaves his canine companion with a heartfelt note at a local animal clinic, run by the compassionate Dr. Angela. He expects Duke to be put down, but cannot bear to witness it. In an unexpected turn of events, Dr. Angela and her team nurse Duke back to health and embark on a heartwarming mission to reunite the dog with his owner. This act of kindness sets in motion a chain of events leading Terry towards a chance at redemption, reconnection with his now adult daughter Alice, and a possible return from the emotional wilderness he's been lost in. As Alice, who found happiness after losing her mother to cancer, reaches out to her estranged father, the story of Terry and Duke unfolds – a poignant tale of resilience, friendship, and the healing power of unconditional love.
